A hotel combining heritage and contemporary design
In Barbizon, L'esquisse offers something quite unique: a A top-of-the-range hotel that also functions as a cultural space and artistic hub. It's the perfect place if you're looking to combine relaxation, discovery and immersion in the atmosphere of the village where one of the greatest pictorial revolutions of the 19th century was born. As early as the 1820s, artists such as Théodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet and Corot fled the Parisian studios to paint nature and the forest of Fontainebleau directly, marking the birth of the’Barbizon school.
A museum to understand how Barbizon changed European art
The establishment houses a a museum dedicated to European artists' colonies and the decisive influence of Barbizon about these creative communities. This is not a static museum: every four months or so, a new geography or a new artist-colony takes pride of place. It's a real window onto these vanished worlds, presented through original works.
Musical Thursdays, or how the tradition continues
Every Thursday evening since 2025, L'esquisse has been welcoming «Sketch Thursdays», a series of cultural events designed to celebrate the creative life of the village. Jazz takes pride of place On the first Thursday of every month, young musicians from the Didier Lockwood Conservatoire liven up the evenings with their improvisations. It's easy to meet up over a drink, listening to these apprentice jazzmen live, in an atmosphere where the café's piano naturally weaves the link between art and relaxation.
Breathing in the air of the painters' village
Barbizon is still alive with the energy of the great painters who have walked here. Art galleries rub shoulders with period houses, and old workshops still tell stories. Staying at L'esquisse means not only visiting a museum or attending a concert, but also be immersed in a place where the forest, the paths and the facades preserve the memory of that unique moment when artists decided to paint the real thing, far from conventional.
The museum: exhibitions that take a fresh look
The Musée de L'Esquisse welcomes regular temporary exhibitions of artists who resonate with the heritage of Barbizon. From Flemish luminist painters to contemporary artists, each exhibition creates a dialogue between past and present. The museum is open every day from 11.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., in free admission.
The café-bar: a cultural stop-off in the heart of the village
L'Esquisse also has a café-bar open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the rest of the week on reservation. A pleasant place to extend your visit to the museum or simply enjoy the Barbizon atmosphere over a drink.
