You know the story of Barbizon painters' colony in the 19th century? This exhibition shows how this movement spread far beyond France's borders. Case study : Oosterbeek, a small Dutch town, which developed its own colony of landscape painters around 1840, directly inspired by Barbizon.
The exhibition highlights artists from Oosterbeek: Johannes Bilders, Anton Mauve, Jozef Israëls, the Maris brothers. Each brought his own sensitivity to the country's landscapes. They transposed the Barbizonian approach (rejection of academicism, plein air, natural subjects) to Dutch geography.
The exhibition is designed by Francisca Van Vloten, former director of Museum Domburg, a leading art historian in the Netherlands. His expertise guarantees a rich, contextualised presentation.
Open daily from 11.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., free admission. Please note: the exhibition closes on 17 March 2026. This is one of the rare opportunities to see this retrospective of Barbizon's cross-border influence. Discover it before it's over!
