La galerie artfontainebleau, at 10 Rue des Trois Maillets, hosts Wawapod, whose real name is Warren Podguszer, born in 1991. An artist who takes masterpieces from art history and recreates them stroke by stroke. Literally.
From 2018, Wawapod was founded in Paris, between Pop Art and street art, a style that blends optical art and popular iconography. His method: taking images that everyone has in mind and reconstructing them by points accumulation. Up close, you can see a grid. Take three steps back, and the painting comes into view.
This reinterpretation is affectionate. It is a tribute to the painters he admires, with a clear aim: to help the general public rediscover these works and to open up the history of art to them in a way that playful, modern and democratic. On the gallery’s page dedicated to the artist, one comes across 4 Roy’s Girls (acrylic and spray paint on canvas, 80 x 80 cm), four faces rendered in four shades of blue, the title of which pays homage to Roy Lichtenstein, and The Creation (acrylic on glass and paper, 50 x 70 cm), two hands reaching out for one another with a small red heart between them.
Le Saturday 10 October, from 2 pm to 7 pm, the gallery is organising the opening of the exhibition and the’unveiling of the mural which Wawapod carries out on its street art wall, with a live painting performance. A chance to see the composition take shape before your very eyes, and to discuss painting with the artist.
Organised by Marco and Sandra Schütz, the gallery champions the’contemporary and urban art between Fontainebleau and Paris. After Fragola de la Vega’s red moons this summer and Street art by ENCS and Onemizer this spring, Wawapod continues to present a programme that enjoys blending street culture with museum culture.
The gallery is open on Fridays and Saturdays, from 10.30 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 7 pm, and also sees patients by appointment. Everything else is on the ArtFontainebleau gallery profile in Fontainebleau. Until 12 December, enough to go there once, then come back with someone.
