On Rue Grande, there’s the bakery where you pop in for a baguette, and the one where you come out with one more bag than you’d planned. Suzy et Arlette has it both ways. Based in 2020, the bakery bakes its own bread, pastries and cakes, and offers quick bites to eat at lunchtime. Behind the sign, Thierry Racoillet, who made his home in Fontainebleau that year.

Certified organic bread

That’s what makes this house so special: its Fresh bread is certified organic, certified by Bureau Veritas, according to the Agence Bio’s official directory. The shop also sells non-organic products, but its everyday bread carries the organic label.

Layering above all else

The first thing customers mention is the pastries : chocolate roll, croissant, and the cruffin, part croissant, part muffin, which has its loyal following. The shop’s pain au chocolat has, in fact, won the second place in the departmental competition organised in 2022 by the Maison de la boulangerie-pâtisserie de Seine-et-Marne. The puff pastry is prepared using the Isigny PDO butter, a detail that the Tourist Office highlights and which you can taste from the very first bite.

Bread and pastries

Le sourdough bread, which is also organic, has its regulars. In the shop window, the classics take centre stage: Paris-Brest, strawberry cake, macarons, shortbread. Cakes that you have for Sunday dessert and are glad you chose.

The right thing to do in the city centre

The shop is right in the heart of town, just a few minutes’ walk from the château de Fontainebleau. Just what you need to fill up before a walk in the park or a picnic in the woods. On Sundays, the queue gets longer towards the end of the morning: There are advantages to arriving early.
