There are places that make a lasting impression. Fontainebleau is one of them. Once you've settled here, even for a few days, it's easy to see why so many travellers choose this town as a base camp from which to explore the region. I've tried it, and I can tell you: it's a choice that changes everything.

Quite simply, a perfect location

Fontainebleau is the perfect compromise: just 40 minutes from Paris by train, but already somewhere else. Here, you can breathe. The town is surrounded by one of the most beautiful forests in Europe, and the surrounding villages are full of charm. There's easy access to Barbizon, Moret-sur-Loing, Nemours and even the La Grande Paroisse leisure centre, just 20 minutes away.

The forest, a life-size playground

It's impossible to talk about Fontainebleau without mentioning its forest. Listed as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, it attracts hikers, climbers, cyclists and horse riders from all over the world. For me, it's a daily delight: every morning, I set off for a walk or a run along the paths, surrounded by pine trees and sandstone boulders. The air is pure, the light magical. Even after years, I'm still discovering new secret spots.

Children love it too: cabins, bike rides, animal watching... There's always an adventure to be had. And for thrill-seekers, bouldering is a unique experience, accessible to all.

A historic heritage within easy reach

Fontainebleau is also a journey through history. The château, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a jewel. You can walk in the footsteps of François I, Napoleon and so many other kings and emperors. I love strolling through the gardens, imagining the balls, the hunts and the life of the court. The town itself has retained its imperial charm, with elegant squares, cobbled streets, churches and small shops.

And then there are the nearby artists' villages: Barbizon, the birthplace of Impressionism, Bourron-Marlotte, Samois-sur-Seine... It's easy to see why so many painters, writers and musicians have settled here.

A French art of living

In Fontainebleau, you take your time. Time to sit on a terrace, sample the local cuisine and chat to the shopkeepers. The Saturday morning market is a not-to-be-missed event: cheeses, breads, fruit, regional specialities... You can fill your basket and feel a bit at home.

There are plenty of restaurants and cafés to suit all tastes and budgets. I have my own favourites, but I also like to be surprised by a new restaurant or a gourmet patisserie.

Activities for everyone, all year round

Whether you're a sports fan, an art lover, a nature enthusiast or just curious, Fontainebleau never disappoints. Between music festivals, international equestrian events, flea markets and exhibitions, there's always something to do.

Looking for relaxation? Head for the La Grande Paroisse leisure park or the Buthiers leisure island, where you can swim, pedal-boat, canoe, water-ski lift and children's games... Perfect for a day out with the family or friends.

A choice of accommodation to suit all styles

What I love about Fontainebleau is the diversity of its accommodation. Whether you're looking for an elegant hotel, a cosy bed and breakfast, a gîte in the heart of nature or a flat in the town centre, you're bound to find what you're looking for. Some prefer the independence of a rental, others the personal welcome of a passionate host. Either way, you're sure to enjoy the hospitality.

An ideal base for exploring the region

By making Fontainebleau your base camp, you open the door to a thousand discoveries. In less than an hour, you can visit the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, explore the narrow streets of Moret-sur-Loing, have a picnic by the Seine, or meet the local craftsmen. Everything is within easy reach.

And when you return to Fontainebleau after a day's outing, you find yourself in a peaceful, timeless atmosphere. You simply feel good.

My advice: go for Fontainebleau

Whether you're coming on your own, as a couple, with family or friends, Fontainebleau is the perfect base from which to explore the Seine-et-Marne and beyond. Here, nature, culture, history and the good life come together. Just pack your bags and enjoy. Try it, and you'll see: choosing Fontainebleau as your base camp is a great way to start savouring your stay.
