I would like to share with you an experience that is particularly close to my heart: a hot air balloon flight over the Fontainebleau region. This extraordinary adventure was a birthday gift from my wife, and I will always cherish the memory of that moment suspended between heaven and earth.
A unique experience above Fontainebleau
The flight route is actually a complete surprise, as it all depends on the wind direction and the chosen departure point. You may be able to fly over the majestic Château de Fontainebleau, its thousand-year-old forest, or the unspoilt landscapes of Seine-et-Marne. Depending on the air currents, you may see ponds, wildlife or romantic little villages.
The course of your flight
Preparation
It all begins with a fascinating ritual: the balloonist (as hot air balloon pilots are known) releases a small helium balloon into the air. By observing its trajectory and ascent speed, he determines the atmospheric conditions and chooses the ideal starting point from among the 14 possible sites around Fontainebleau. The entire team is then driven by car to the selected location, with the hot air balloon carefully stowed in its trailer.
Theft
Once in the air, what immediately strikes you is the absolute silence that envelops you. Only the occasional sound of the burner breaks this tranquillity – with a rather amusing effect on the dogs below, who never fail to express their surprise by barking as soon as the flame roars to lift the balloon. The balloonist only controls the altitude, leaving the wind to decide our direction.
The landing
This is perhaps the most exciting moment of the adventure! We are given precise instructions on how to position ourselves and hold on tightly to the handles of the basket. When landing, the balloon can be dragged along for several metres before coming to a complete stop. This is one of the reasons why hot air balloons are not used for commercial transport: it is impossible to predict the landing point! During my flight, we landed in a field of hemp (completely legal, the kind used to make clothing and furniture): as the basket dragged along the ground, it crushed several plants, releasing a distinctive smell that surprised everyone. I admit that I prudently kept my work phone in my pocket rather than giving in to the temptation to take souvenir photos in the middle of this unusual vegetation!
