The Fontainebleau market is changing its opening hours for one evening only. Friday 18 September 2026, from 6 pm to 10 pm, the Republic Square, which the poster simply refers to as the Market Square, is home to a night-time craft market. Artisans, producers and designers set up their stalls just as the shops in the town centre are closing for the day.
The City announces products from craftspeople, producers and designers, with no list of exhibitors available at this stage. Catering will be provided on site, which changes everything: you don’t just pop in to do a quick shop; you come here to spend the evening.
We rush through the morning market, shopping basket under our arm, calculating how much time is left before midday. In the evening, the lighting changes, you wander through the aisles in a different way, and you stop to chat to the person who made the things they’re selling. Above all, it’s the only time that works for all those who work during the week and never see Place de la République as anything other than deserted.
The event is organised by the Town of Fontainebleau, with Géraud, the concessionaire for Bellifontaine’s markets, and Regilog. Mayor Julien Gondard and Anthony Landais, the councillor responsible for trade, announced it the day before on their social media accounts: the event forms part of a series of local council initiatives to support local businesses.
And as the coming weekend is going to be busy, we might as well sort it all out in one go: the European Heritage Days in Fontainebleau on 19 and 20 September, Les Rendez-vous de la Forme: a free sports day on Saturday 19th, and the’UCAIF antiques and second-hand market at Place Napoléon Bonaparte on Sunday 20th.
