She collects dead wood in the Forest of Fontainebleau and grafts it onto unglazed red sandstone. The result resembles a fossilised branch or a bone. Cathy Lagarrigue explains «Encounter with the Forest» at the Maison des Associations, the 10 October to 27 November 2026.
The technique is simple and it works: combining a fired, dense, permanent material with a found, dry, already dead material. The ceramicist works on Saint-Martin-en-Bière, on the edge of the mountain range, and that’s where her materials come from. It’s not a theme she’s picked from a catalogue; it’s the ground on which she lives.
The route includes a video projection installationand suspensions, a study on the shadows and a layer of mulch on the floor. In other words, you step into something rather than walking along a series of plinths. After the summer the Fontainebleau Forest has just experienced, an exhibition that brings dead wood into a gallery takes on a significance it would not have had a year ago.
Input free of charge, the Monday to Friday, 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm, at the Maison des Associations, 6 rue du Mont Ussy. The exhibition runs for seven weeks, so there’s plenty of time, but as it’s only open on weekdays (excluding Saturdays), do allow time for a lunch break.
