We often forget that Impressionism owes its existence to a man who nearly lost everything by believing in it. «The Collectors», from François Barluet, tell this story to the Municipal theatre the Saturday 10 October 2026 at 8.30 pm.
Paul Durand-Ruel, an art dealer who had taken refuge in England during the Franco-Prussian War, met Claude Monet. He buys, exhibits and champions art, and narrowly avoids bankruptcy on several occasions by supporting painters whom nobody else wants. It is he who will open up the American market to Impressionism, and it is this stubborn intuition that the play brings to life.

This topic strikes a particular chord here. The practice of painting en plein air, which led to Impressionism, was partly pioneered just a few kilometres away, in the forest and at Barbizon, where Millet and Rousseau had worked a generation earlier. Seeing this play in Fontainebleau is like seeing it from the ground up.
