Sixty editions: the Barbizon Grand Prix is one of those events that the artists’ village organises on a regular basis. From the 10 to 18 October, l'Jacques Boitiat Academy exposes to the’Marc Jacquet Cultural Centre the works of the artists in the competition: paintings, watercolours and sculptures.
Founded in 1962, the academy pays tribute to the painter and watercolourist Henri-Célestin Boitiat (1866–1944). Every autumn, she ensures that Barbizon remains what it has always been: a place where people come to paint and exhibit their work, just a stone’s throw from the Auberge Ganne and the studio-homes of Rousseau and Millet.
A competition exhibition has a certain vibrancy that a museum lacks: styles that complement one another, artists who are often present, and the thrill of trying to guess who will win. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to stroll down the Grande Rue in Barbizon in the late autumn, when the leaves are changing colour at the edge of the forest.
