In 1922, Katherine Mansfield, suffering from tuberculosis and at the end of her strength, moved to Fontainebleau-Avon, to the Prieuré, at the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man founded by Gurdjieff. She died there in January 1923, aged thirty-four. «Waiting for Gurdjieff» recounts these past few months, at the’Âne Vert Theatre, the Saturday 3 October at 7.30 pm and Sunday 4 October 2026 at 5.00 pm.
That is what makes this play so special for an audience from Bellifontaine. The Priory of Basses-Loges, in Avon, was indeed home to this community, and Mansfield is actually buried there, in Avon Cemetery. Seeing this play performed just three kilometres from the actual locations is not the same as seeing it in Paris.
