Fontainebleau Forest closed to the public until 7 August 2026 inclusive
Following the fires in July, prefectural orders dated 29 July 2026 prohibit access to the Fontainebleau state-owned forest, regardless of the area, as well as to the state-owned forests of La Commanderie and Nanteau-Poligny, the municipal forest of Nemours and the closed-off area of Les Trois-Pignons. Burnt roots weaken the trees, which may fall long after the fire has passed, and the ONF is continuing its inspections and safety work. People walk, cycle and picnic here, but they often forget that the Fontainebleau forest is, above all, a vast wilderness. The’Tourist Office is offering a guided tour of in the footsteps of its discreet inhabitantsthe Saturday 13 June 2026 at 2pm.
Covering 25,000 hectares, the forest is home to deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, not to mention a multitude of birds, insects and small mammals. Most of them remain unseen by the hurried walker. But they leave traces everywhere: footprints in the sand, rub marks on tree trunks, trails through the ferns, and the remains of meals. You still need to know how to spot them, though.
That is precisely the aim of this walk, accompanied by a nature guide : deciphering the clues, distinguishing a roe deer’s footprint from that of a wild boar, understanding the animals’ habits and the way they shape the landscape. An ideal family outing that offers a fresh perspective on paths you thought you knew by heart.
