Singing Brel is a risky business: everyone knows the songs, everyone has their own version in mind, and the slightest imitation sounds off-key. Gérard Chambre gets down to work on it with «To the Ends of the Earth», at the’Âne Vert Theatre from Fontainebleau, the Saturday 26 September at 7.30 pm and Sunday 27 September at 5.00 pm.
It’s the data that changes everything. L’Âne Vert, 6 Rue des Sablons, is the smallest performance venue in Fontainebleau, and one of the most charming. At this distance, a song recital is no longer a concert but a conversation: you can see the singer’s breath, you can hear the silences, and Brel’s repertoire – which thrives as much on its lulls as on its soaring moments – benefits enormously from it.
The title is taken from a quote by Brel featured on the show’s poster: «There are two kinds of time: there’s the time that waits and the time that hopes. » That says it all. Gérard Chambre explores the repertoire of the Great Jacques as a performer rather than a lookalike, which is the only honest way to approach this material.
Prices range from €14 to €21 : full price €21, concessions €14 for under-25s, jobseekers and members, €17 for season ticket holders and groups of ten or more. The Pass Culture is accepted for 15–18-year-olds.
