It’s a book that even people who never read have devoured in one go, and which has moved an unreasonable number of readers to tears on the underground. «The smell after the rain», by Cédric Sapin-Defour, has been adapted for the stage and is being performed at the’Âne Vert Theatre the Saturday 10 October at 7.30 pm and Sunday 11 October 2026 at 5.00 pm.
It’s the story of a man and his dog, a Bernese Mountain Dog called Ubac, and their thirteen years together in the mountains. Put like that, you might just shrug your shoulders. In reality, the book is about attachment, about the way an animal shapes a life, and about what to make of it all when the animal is no longer there. The subject is universal, and the text’s restraint is what saves it from sentimentality.
