Until 30 August 2026, the Fontainebleau Region Centre for Artisans, at 4 Rue Royale, showcases the work of Marie-France Degueldre. Her field of expertise is as specific as it is unexpected: she creates porcelain buttons.

The cameo reimagined as a button

Marie-France Degueldre starts with raw porcelain and reinterprets the cameo, this relief-style piece of jewellery that has endured through the centuries since Antiquity. She turns them into buttons, or «button jewellery» mounted on a pin. The detail that makes all the difference: she doesn’t use any moulds. Each piece is handcrafted, which means that no two are exactly the same.

Two collections created for Fontainebleau

For this exhibition, the artisan is presenting pieces with a direct link to the city, as well as two previously unseen collections. Cameos presents a series of unique portraits of women, including that of Rosa Bonheur, the wildlife painter who spent so much time exploring the Forest of Fontainebleau. The Heirs draws on the understated elegance of vintage buttons and adapts it for today’s fashion.

It’s the sort of exhibition that restores your faith in the concept of artistic craftsmanship: no grand statements, just a technique taken to the extreme on a tiny object that nobody ever looks at. The Fontainebleau Region Centre for Artisans publishes practical information on its website.
