Fontainebleau Forest closed to the public until 7 August 2026 inclusive
Following the fires in July, prefectural orders dated 29 July 2026 prohibit access to the Fontainebleau state-owned forest, regardless of the area, as well as to the state-owned forests of La Commanderie and Nanteau-Poligny, the municipal forest of Nemours and the closed-off area of Les Trois-Pignons. Burnt roots weaken the trees, which may fall long after the fire has passed, and the ONF is continuing its inspections and safety work. If you were to take a visitor to see «the real forest», you'd probably take them to Franchard. The’Tourist Office offers a guided tour on biodiversity gorges and plains, the Saturday 20 June 2026 at 2pm.
The gorges de Franchard offer one of the most striking panoramic views of the massif: a landscape of chaotic sandstone formations, flats wind-swept rocky outcrops, heather-covered moors and temporary pools. At times, it feels as though you’re hundreds of kilometres away from the Île-de-France region. The area is classified as ecological reserve, making it an ideal place for observation.
Accompanied by a nature guide, you’ll learn to interpret this unique ecosystem: the flora of the moors and plateaus, adapted to poor, dry soil; the species found only here; the role of the pools; and the delicate balance between tourism and conservation. This outing provides the keys to better protecting what we love, in keeping with the philosophy championed by the Tourist Office: the more we know about the forest, the more we learn to respect it.
Saturday 20 June at 2pm, at the Franchard gorges. Price : 16 € for adults, 9 € for children. Make sure you wear suitable footwear, as the terrain is rocky. Booking is essential via the Tourist Office.
