The “Conversations with History” series offers a friendly, thoughtful approach to major historical issues. Organised by FLC (Fontainebleau Loisirs Culture) in partnership with the Hôtel Victoria, these evenings take the form of aperitif talks where the emphasis is on exchange and freedom of speech.
Hosted by Philippe Jacquet, a professor of history, these sessions don't just evoke the past; they question the legacy it leaves in our lives today. The aim is to debate in a friendly atmosphere, far removed from the traditional academic conference format.
This session invites participants to examine the painful memories of humanity. The debate will focus on sensitive issues such as colonisation, deportation and the destruction of civilisations. How should contemporary societies deal with this difficult past? From forgetting to repentance to indifference, the talk will explore the different ways of dealing with these complex legacies.
For example, previous sessions have tackled a wide range of themes, from the place of heritage with “Notre-Dame, tel le Phénix”, to the complexity of the 20th century (“Vivre avec le XXe siècle?”), demonstrating the richness of the subjects covered at these events.
