After the film-debate on Vittorio De Sica's Garden of the Finzi-Contini, cycle «Italian Culture Encounters» organised by FLC and the association Ciné-Bleau continues with a monument to Italian cinema: Rocco and his brothers (Rocco e i suoi fratelli) of Luchino Visconti, screened in the original version with subtitles.
Released in 1960, The film follows a Calabrian family who leave southern Italy to try their luck in Milan. Among the five brothers, Rocco and Simone turn to boxing as a way out, but a woman disrupts their fraternal ties and precipitates the break-up of the clan. Visconti creates a tragic fresco about uprootedness, family solidarity put to the test and the illusions of urban modernity. The film was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and is still quoted by Francis Ford Coppola as one of the direct inspirations of the Sponsor.
As with all the events in this series, the screening will be followed by a discussion. exchange with the audience. That's what makes these evenings at the Hermitage so special: you don't just watch a film, you discuss it and put it into its historical and artistic context. An ideal format for rediscovering a classic you think you know, or seeing it for the first time with an enlightened eye.
