Le Sunday 23 August 2026 at 9.30 am, Fontainebleau commemorates the 82nd anniversary of its liberation. The ceremony is taking place on the forecourt of the Town Hall, 40 Rue Grande, in the presence of the mayor Julien Gondard and the local council team.
The liberation of the town took place in late August 1944, between the landings in Provence and the liberation of Paris. Fontainebleau, a strategic position on the road to the south, saw the Allied advance pass through in the days leading up to the surrender of the Paris garrison. The annual ceremony keeps this memory alive, at a time of year when many residents are on holiday, which explains why attendance is often low.
It’s a short ceremony, lasting about thirty minutes, open to everyone. For those interested in the subject, Bois-le-Roi is organising its own commemoration a week later, on 30 August.
