We step into the paintings of Dominique Damarzit just like in a Bosch painting: through the details. A red bird with a squint, a flying fish, a hooded figure with an evasive gaze. Then you take a step back, and the whole scene begins to tell a story. His exhibition «Caught red-handed» takes place at the Companions’ House from Fontainebleau on the the last three weekends of September 2026.
The painter claims the legacy of Hieronymus Bosch and the Flemish Renaissance, and this is evident at first glance: the same penchant for teeming life, the same way of bringing the monstrous and the tender together. His creatures are caught «red-handed in the act of theft, ridicule or banditry». They are rogues, but courageous rogues, all driven by the same desire to live at any cost, even if it means bending the rules. The exhibition combines paintings and sculptures.
The Maison des Compagnons du Devoir, 26 Rue de la Cloche, is not open every day. It is a guild hall, with all that this implies in terms of meticulous joinery and craftsmanship. Seeing the sculptures displayed in this setting adds another dimension to the visit. The weekend of the 19 and 20 September It falls during European Heritage Days: the house will therefore also be offering a tour of its own premises.
The Saturdays and Sundays 12 and 13, 19 and 20, 26 and 27 September 2026, from 11am to 7pm. Allow a good hour if you really want to take a proper look: these paintings aren’t the sort you can rush through.
