Le Sunday 30 August 2026 at 10.45 am, Bois-le-Roi is commemorating the the liberation of the town on 23 August 1944. The ceremony takes place in front of the Marker dated 23 August, this monument that motorists pass by without always realising what it marks.

There is a simple explanation for the gap between the date of the event and that of the commemoration: the local council has scheduled the tribute for the following Sunday so that as many people as possible can attend.

The local context

The liberation of the southern part of Seine-et-Marne took place in late August 1944, in the days following the Provence landings and shortly before the liberation of Paris. Fontainebleau was liberated that same month, and the town is organising its own ceremony on 23 August. For anyone interested in this period, the two events complement each other well.

The ceremony is open to everyone and lasts about half an hour. Information on the Bois-le-Roi town website.
