If there is one area where Marie-Antoinette Fashion has left its mark on its own era and all those that followed. The Château de Fontainebleau is paying tribute to it this summer with an exhibition that creates a dialogue between the 18th century and today’s haute couture.
From 5 June to 2 November 2026, the tour route takes in eleven stage costumes designed by Christian Lacroix, created for the opera The Longjumeau Postillon by Adolphe Adam, in Michel Fau’s production staged at the Opéra-Comique in 2019. Crafted in the Opéra-Comique’s workshops, these flamboyant costumes capture the boldness and elegance of the queen’s wardrobe.
The eleven costumes are not all on display in a single room: they are scattered along the route, from one room to the next. The usual stroll through the château is thus combined with a little treasure hunt, offering visitors the chance to (re)discover the state rooms whilst keeping their eyes peeled.
The exhibition is on display in partnership with the National Centre for Stage Costumes and the Opéra-Comique, as part of the Art History Festival, which this year is dedicated to fashion. It is accessible with a ticket to the castle, at no extra cost. Full details can be found on the Fontainebleau Castle site.
