A world-class string quartet, a challenging programme, free admission: the Musical events in Seine-et-Marne are the sort of events that make you wonder why they aren’t more popular. The 27th edition passes through Fontainebleau on Saturday 26 September 2026 at 7.00 pm.

The idea: to take chamber music out of the concert halls

For the past 27 years, ProQuartet brings young ensembles to heritage venues across the department, far from the major Parisian stages, with a simple idea: that the string quartet should no longer be the preserve of those who already know how to play. The concerts are free, subject to availability, and the atmosphere there is far more relaxed than the repertoire might suggest.

A programme that tells the story of a hundred years of history

Le Kairi Quartet, based in Salzburg, is performing three works that complement each other well. The Schubert’s Quartet Movement (1820), a single movement from a quartet that was never completed, feverish and brief. The Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1 (1923), known as the «Kreutzer Sonata», inspired by Tolstoy’s short story, is undoubtedly the most intense piece in the Czech repertoire. And the Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 9 in C major, Opus 59 No. 3 «Razumovsky» (1806), which brings the evening to a close with a final fugue of formidable energy.

The venue

The concert is taking place at the Protestant church in Fontainebleau, in partnership with the United Protestant Church of Fontainebleau-Nemours-Montereau. A modest venue, with crisp, precise acoustics: exactly what is needed to hear the four voices stand out.

And the next day, in Bois-le-Roi

The festival runs over two weekends, from 18 to 27 September. The Sunday 27 September, he set up home in the Clos Saint-Père park in Bois-le-Roi, featuring botanical and musical walks followed by a concert by the Hana Quartet. Just the thing to make the weekend last a little longer.
