Did you know?

He pioneered affordable concerts; he died in Fontainebleau

On 15 September 1819, Jules Étienne Pasdeloup was born in Paris. He graduated from the Conservatoire at a very young age, In 1861, he founded the ‘Concerts populaires de musique classique’, at the Cirque Napoléon. Several thousand seats, and a deliberately cheap ticket.

They play Beethoven and Mozart there, but also Saint-Saëns, Massenet and Wagner. To an audience that isn’t made up of the Opera’s season ticket holders. That was the whole idea.

Ruined following the War of 1870, He died in Fontainebleau on 13 August 1887. The orchestra that bears his name, re-established in 1917, is still performing today.

Elsewhere in the world

The day someone registered google.com

On 15 September 1997, two Stanford students register the domain name google.com. The company itself did not yet exist. Google Inc. would not be incorporated until a year later.

On that day, nobody marked the occasion. But registering a domain name is a public act, and the record of it remains. Thirty years on, anyone can look up the .com records and see the date, down to the second.

Points of interest

Free music at the Parterre, every day at one o’clock

Three years after Pasdeloup had launched his affordable concerts at the Cirque Napoléon, the same idea arrived here, in an even simpler form: free and outdoors.

On Thursday 15 September 1864, The Bee points out that The Guides’ music concerts now take place at the Parterre, at a specific time. The Parterre is the château’s large French-style garden, open to all.

A military band, a public garden, and no one to show a ticket to.

A local point of interest every day.
