The day INSEAD moved into the château
On 12 September 1959, INSEAD’s first MBA cohort takes up residence at the Château de Fontainebleau. The school is two years old. It was founded by the Paris Chamber of Commerce. The official opening will take place on 9 October.
That is the date given by the school itself.
Ever since then, a town of 15,000 people has coexisted with a world-class business school – and vice versa. Sixty-seven this year.
«We choose to go to the Moon»
On 12 September 1962, at ten o’clock in the morning, in the heat of Houston, John Fitzgerald Kennedy spoke to a crowd of thirty-five thousand people gathered at the Rice University stadium.
«We choose to go to the Moon in this decade, not because it is easy, but precisely because it is difficult.»
Seven years later, it was done.
Lascaux, four boys, and a dog that didn’t discover anything
Legend has it that a dog fell into a hole. The Ministry of Culture’s account is less dramatic, and far more interesting.
Marcel Ravidat, aged seventeen, spotted the hole four days earlier but had nothing with him to open it. He returned on Thursday 12 September 1940 with three friends, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agniel and Simon Coencas. The dog, Robot, was indeed there. The idea, however, came from Ravidat.
On the same day of the calendar, four teenagers look up at a ceiling painted twenty thousand years ago, and a president looks up at the Moon.
