There are weekends when Fontainebleau takes on a different atmosphere, and this one is the 29 and 30 August 2026 is one of them. The’Fontainebleau Association of Traders, Craftspeople and Manufacturers is reinstating its Big Clearance Sale : two days of clearance sales before the new collections arrive, and a chance to see Rue Grande as more than just a thoroughfare. It’s the last big shopping spree before the start of the new school year, and it unfolds in two distinct phases.
On Saturdays, everything takes place indoors, or just outside. Participating shops open their doors with special offers and set up small displays in front of their shop windows. A Competition with Shoop City is installed Place de la République, and several shops organise their own events. This is the day for those who prefer to browse without the Sunday crowds, and who want to take the time to pop in.
On Sundays, everything takes place outdoors, in the city centre streets, which are closed to traffic. The Second-hand dealers are setting up shop at Place de l’Étape, which gives the day its dual character: shopkeepers on one side, a flea market on the other. A A travelling band will be performing from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm and changes the music throughout the day, which avoids the monotonous sound system that you often find at many car boot sales.
This is something many people only realise that very morning, whilst driving. The Sunday 30 August, from 5am to 10pm, traffic is prohibited or restricted on several roads in the city centre, except for emergency vehicles. The following roads are closed to traffic:
To allow the release of the L’Étape car park and the evacuation of residents living on Rue du Château, the Rue Marrier has been made a one-way street On Sunday from 5.00 am to 10.00 pm, in the direction from Rue du Château towards Rue d’Avon. If you are staying in the city centre or need to check out of your room this Sunday morning, please plan ahead: you will not be able to leave via the usual route. On Sundays, as the town centre is closed to traffic, it’s best to park on the outskirts and walk the rest of the way: Place de l’Étape is taken over by second-hand dealers and the adjacent streets fill up quickly. And if you’re coming mainly to hunt for bargains, do go early: the best finds are snapped up within the first hour. Those who want to keep the hunt going will find that in the months that follow, the’UCAIF’s monthly antiques and second-hand goods market at Place Napoléon Bonaparte, smaller but still there as always.
