Fontainebleau Forest closed to the public until 7 August 2026 inclusive

Following the fires in July, prefectural orders dated 29 July 2026 prohibit access to the Fontainebleau state-owned forest, regardless of the area, as well as to the state-owned forests of La Commanderie and Nanteau-Poligny, the municipal forest of Nemours and the closed-off area of Les Trois-Pignons. Burnt roots weaken the trees, which may fall long after the fire has passed, and the ONF is continuing its inspections and safety work. The ban is likely to be extended: we are keeping an news feed on the forest fires in Fontainebleau.

The Forest of Fontainebleau is not just beautiful: it is steeped in history. The’Tourist Office offers a storytelling walk where a storyteller transforms the walk into an imaginary journey, the Saturday 13 June 2026 at 3pm. A gentle and poetic piece, intended primarily for families.

When the rocks start to talk

As you walk along the paths, the sandstone outcrops, the centuries-old trees and the clearings become the backdrop for stories, legends and characters that resurface at every turn. The walk is a leisurely one, punctuated by breaks where you sit down to listen. Children love this blend of real forest and pure imagination, and parents are happy to join in the fun.

A break for young and old

There’s no physical challenge here: the main experience takes place in your ears and in your mind. It’s a lovely way to introduce young children to the forest, in a way that goes beyond sport or physical achievement, by awakening that sense of wonder that this forest has always inspired in artists and walkers alike.
