Fontainebleau Forest closed to the public until 7 August 2026 inclusive
Following the fires in July, prefectural orders dated 29 July 2026 prohibit access to the Fontainebleau state-owned forest, regardless of the area, as well as to the state-owned forests of La Commanderie and Nanteau-Poligny, the municipal forest of Nemours and the closed-off area of Les Trois-Pignons. Burnt roots weaken the trees, which may fall long after the fire has passed, and the ONF is continuing its inspections and safety work. It is undoubtedly the most iconic activity in our forest, and yet many residents of Bellifontaine have never tried it. The’Pays de Fontainebleau Tourist Office offers a an introduction to bouldering supervised by a professional, in the heart of the forest. Saturdays 6 and 20 June 2026 at 1pm. The perfect opportunity to finally get your hands on the sandstone that attracts climbers from all over the world.
Whilst the English word «bouldering» is now known all over the world, this is where it originated. As early as the late 19th century, the first rock climbers would come to practise on the sandstone boulders of’Apremont, the Cuvier or Franchard before leaving for the Alps. Over time, Fontainebleau has become a discipline in its own right, with its famous colour circuits invented there and imitated all over the world. For a climbing enthusiast, climbing «at Bleau» is a bit like a pilgrimage.
You don’t need to have climbed before: the session is designed for beginners, both adults and children. A qualified instructor will teach you how to read a block, placing your feet correctly, focusing on balance rather than strength, and landing a fall on the crash pad. The sandstone at Fontainebleau, with its rounded shapes and holds sculpted by erosion, is surprisingly fun for beginners. You often find yourself surprised to have climbed sections that seemed impossible at first glance.
Two dates in June Saturdays 6 and 20 June at 1pm. Price : 42 € for adults, 34 € for children, equipment provided. Please bring sportswear and suitable footwear. Booking is essential and the meeting point in the forest will be provided upon registration.
