If you're interested in royal history, here's a great initiative from the château: the year 2026 celebrates Marie-Antoinette and visitors are invited to write letters to the last Queen of France. It's a simple but moving gesture, which takes place in a dedicated area just outside the boutique.
Did you know that Marie-Antoinette stayed at Fontainebleau 17 times between 1770 and 1786, totalling 440 days at the castle? 2026 marks 240 years after her last visit. This is an opportunity to understand the links between this controversial queen and this emblematic monument. Letter writing is free and accessible to all, with no need to register in advance.
Don't just write a letter: the château is offering an exceptional programme: exhibitions, equestrian shows in April, the Queen's Ball on 4 July, a Christian Lacroix costume exhibition in June, and a major exhibition in October. There really is something for every month of this special year.
Open activity Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and weekends. Seasonal working hours : October to March 9.30am-5pm, April to September 9.30am-6pm. Castle entrance required for this activity.
Please note: We would be delighted to check your establishment details. It's free, but to make sure it's you, please complete the information below.
