An unforgettable hot-air balloon adventure over Fontainebleau

I'd like to share with you an experience that is particularly close to my heart: a hot-air balloon flight over the Fontainebleau region. This extraordinary adventure was given to me by my wife for my birthday, and I still have fond memories of this moment suspended between heaven and earth.

A unique experience above Fontainebleau

The flight itinerary is actually a complete surprise, as it all depends on the wind direction and the chosen departure point. You might fly over the majestic Château de Fontainebleau, its thousand-year-old forest, or the unspoilt landscapes of the Seine-et-Marne region. As the air currents change, ponds, wildlife and romantic villages come into view.

Your flight schedule

Preparation

It all begins with a fascinating ritual: the balloonist (as the pilot of a hot-air balloon is known) releases a small helium balloon into the air. By observing its trajectory and rate of ascent, he determines the atmospheric conditions and chooses the ideal departure point from among 14 possible sites around Fontainebleau. The whole team is then driven to the chosen location, with the balloon carefully stowed in its trailer.

Theft

Once up in the air, what's immediately striking is the absolute silence that envelops you. Only the occasional sound of the burner interrupts this tranquillity - with a rather amusing effect on the dogs below, who never fail to show their surprise by barking as soon as the flame roars to raise the balloon. The balloonist controls only the altitude, letting the wind decide our direction.

The landing

This is perhaps the most exciting part of the adventure! We're told precisely how to position ourselves and hold on tight to the basket handles. After all, on landing, the balloon can be dragged for several meters before coming to a complete stop. This is one of the reasons why hot-air balloons are not used for commercial transport: it's impossible to predict where you'll end up! Incidentally, on my flight, we landed in a field of hemp (quite official, the kind used to make clothes and furniture): as the basket dragged along the ground, it crushed several plants, releasing a characteristic odor that surprised everyone. I confess to having kept my work phone in my pocket rather than give in to the temptation of taking souvenir photos in the middle of this particular vegetation!
