Fontainebleau: the ideal base for exploring the region

There are places that make a lasting impression. Fontainebleau is one of them. Once you've settled here, even for a few days, it's easy to see why so many travelers choose this town as a base camp from which to discover the region. I've tried it, and I can tell you: it's a choice that changes everything.

A perfect situation, quite simply

Fontainebleau is the perfect compromise: just 40 minutes from Paris by train, but already somewhere else. Here, you can breathe. The town is surrounded by one of Europe's most beautiful forests, and the surrounding villages are full of charm. It's easy to get around, whether to Barbizon, Moret-sur-Loing or Nemours, or even to the La Grande Paroisse leisure park, a 20-minute drive away.

The forest, a life-size playground

It's impossible to talk about Fontainebleau without mentioning its forest. Classified as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, it attracts hikers, climbers, cyclists and horse riders from all over the world. For me, it's a daily delight: every morning, I set off for a walk or a run along the paths, amidst the pines and sandstone boulders. The air is pure, the light magical. Even after years, I'm still discovering new secret spots.

Kids love it too: cabins, bike rides, animal watching... there's always an adventure to be had. And for thrill-seekers, bouldering is a unique experience, accessible to all.

A historic heritage within easy reach

Fontainebleau is also a journey through history. The UNESCO-listed château is a jewel. You can walk in the footsteps of François I, Napoleon and so many other kings and emperors. I love strolling through the gardens, imagining balls, hunts and court life. The town itself has retained its imperial charm: elegant squares, cobbled streets, churches and small shops.

And then there are the nearby artists' villages: Barbizon, cradle of Impressionism, Bourron-Marlotte, Samois-sur-Seine... It's easy to see why so many painters, writers and musicians have settled here.

French art de vivre

In Fontainebleau, you take your time. Time to sit on a terrace, sample the local gastronomy and chat with shopkeepers. The Saturday morning market is an appointment not to be missed: cheeses, breads, fruit, regional specialities... Fill your basket and feel at home.

There are plenty of restaurants and cafés to suit all tastes and budgets. I have my own little favorites, but I also like to be surprised by a new table or a gourmet patisserie.

Year-round activities for all

Whether you're a sports fan, an art lover, a nature enthusiast or simply curious, Fontainebleau never disappoints. Between music festivals, international equestrian events, flea markets and exhibitions, there's always something to do.

Looking for relaxation? Head for the La Grande Paroisse leisure park or the Île de Loisirs de Buthiers: swimming, pedal-boating, canoeing, waterskiing, children's games... Perfect for a day out with family or friends.

A choice of accommodation to suit all styles

What I love about Fontainebleau is the diversity of its accommodation. Whether you're looking for an elegant hotel, a cosy bed & breakfast, a gîte in the heart of nature or a downtown apartment, you're bound to find what you're looking for. Some prefer the independence of a rental, others the personalized welcome of a passionate host. Either way, you're sure to find a warm welcome.

An ideal starting point for exploring the region

By making Fontainebleau your base camp, you open the door to a thousand discoveries. In less than an hour, you can visit the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, explore the narrow streets of Moret-sur-Loing, picnic on the banks of the Seine, or meet local artisans. Everything is within easy reach.

And then, to come back to Fontainebleau after a day's excursion is to rediscover a peaceful, timeless atmosphere. You simply feel good.

My advice: go for Fontainebleau

Whether you're coming alone, as a couple, with family or friends, Fontainebleau is the ideal starting point for exploring the Seine-et-Marne and beyond. Here, nature, culture, history and the good life come together. Just pack your bags and enjoy. Try it, and you'll see: choosing Fontainebleau as your base camp means you've already begun to enjoy your stay.
