AXIS MUNDI CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS

The show Axis Mundi offers a unique artistic experience that transforms the traditional tour of the Château de Fontainebleau into an immersive acrobatic wander. Four circus artists take spectators on a unique audio and physical exploration of the château's historic collections.

Innovative artistic creation

This creation 2024 by Lucas Struna is the winner of the first call for projects “Cirque en Musée” (Circus in Museums), a unique initiative in France launched by Le Plongeoir, Pôle national Cirque Le Mans Sarthe Pays de la Loire. The revolutionary concept aims to build a new repertoire of circus performances designed specifically for museum spaces and their collections.

A multi-sensory immersive experience

Spectators equipped with a headset follow the acrobats into the intimacy of the castle's rooms. The artists explore their relationship with art and acrobatics, creating an ongoing dialogue between their movements and the works on display. The boundaries between art and performance blur, questioning what is truly being presented: the work or the artist?

Conceptual and philosophical foundations

The show is inspired by Waldemar Deonna's book “The Symbolism of Ancient Acrobatics”, returning to the origins of acrobatics. This intellectual approach questions the profound meaning of circus arts and their resonance with heritage art preserved in prestigious venues.

A tour of the biggest museums

Since its creation in June 2024, Axis Mundi has been presented in several prestigious museums: the Musée de Tessé in Le Mans (first performances), the Musées des Beaux-Arts in Brest and Angers, the Musée départemental d'Épinal, and the Abbaye royale de Fontevraud. This tour confirms the successful adaptation of the concept to different heritage spaces.

The artistic team

The show brings together a multidisciplinary creative team: Lucas Struna (writing and circus choreography), Alexandre Meriau and Laurent Hilairet (sound design), and Lola Faguet (costume design). The performance features a cast of several professional acrobats who alternate depending on the performance.
